随着越来越多的国际大型会议和博览会进入中国,“绿色会议”这个名词伴随着可持续发展这一概念也迈入了人们的视野。用可持续发展的方式开展会议被人们成为“绿色会议“。本期《MAG誌》将围绕“什么是绿色会议”;“为什么要举办绿色会议“;”绿色会议的近期趋势“;”绿色会议的成功案例分析”四点带您共同走近绿色会议。

什么是绿色会议

绿色会议是指在会议筹措和开展过程中采取人为努力减少环境负担的会议。绿色会议的筹备者在筹备过程中减少人工、能源、资料、交通、电子设备的使用能够相应减少环境负担,或者通过号召参与者减少食物浪费、节约住宿带来的能源消耗等等也可以被称为绿色会议的另一方面。现在又提出了绿色建筑和绿色设计等多种相关概念,概念的共同点都是通过各种各样的努力减少会议过程中对环境造成的影响、改变甚至伤害。

“绿色会议”这个概念目前在全球的旅游业和会展行业悄然成风。美国以及欧洲的几个大型会展中心不仅是现了会议召开过程中的“绿色会议”模式,甚至在建造伊始就已经使用了绿色建筑和绿色设计手段从源头上成为百分之百的“绿色会展”中心。

世界级盛事,比如意大利、悉尼、希腊的奥林匹克运动会,又或者美国国内的民主党及共和党代表大会,都已经在绿色会议的举办方面拥有了成功的经验。2007年在世界范围内举办的“活乐地球气候危机演唱会”也以保护环境、对抗气候变化为理念。

越来越多的旅游行业和会议行业的先锋业者已经在追随这一步伐,在力所能及的范围内推广绿色会议和绿色会议策划等等。行业工会甚至出台了关于绿色会议的一系列指标和指导。各国政府部门和非营利组织也已经通过研究、推荐、技术支持与信誉保证等方式实际支持绿色会议。有关绿色会议的奖项也在逐渐增多,吸引人们对于绿色会议所带来成果的注目。

“绿色会议”作为先锋性概念已经成为世界经济持续发展和抵抗气候变化运动大潮中的一员。

 

为什么要举办绿色会议

既然绿色会议是指通过努力减少对于环境的负面影响,那么绿色会议的核心就在于“可持续发展”。而绿色会议的可持续发展可行性上需要寻找社会、坏境和经济三方面的平衡和互相制约。事实上,绿色会议不只会给坏境带来积极影响,对于社会和经济方面也有着正面的作用。

经济方面来说,筹措和举办绿色会议并不仅仅是对坏境负责,也能够为会议举办者带来实际的经济效益。 事实上,很多环境保护行为在节约成本方面达到了不错的效果。

例如:大量回收和再利用与会者已经使用过的名牌,能够节省相应费用。

环境方面来说,使用可回收材料、再利用已回收材料等行为都可以减少对于环境的负担。

例如:一个2200人的会议的水杯和食器如果都使用瓷器这种可循环使用的器具,可以减少使用895公斤的塑料垃圾。同样一个2200人、持续3天的会议如果让与会者自己倒水的话,会节省984公升的饮水。

绿色会议的近期趋势

 

食物:拣选本地天然、当季食材是绿色会议开设时的流行推荐。养殖和餐饮业通常涉及到很多当地人口

或者移民人口,可以很大程度促进当地就业。每天至少提供一个全素菜也成为不少绿色会议是的必然选项,这一小小的举措能够带来多重效应。既能减少二氧化碳的排放量,又能够照顾与会者的健康饮食。

 

交通:每个国家和地区的交通状况和主要交通工具都有所不同,除了使用电动及太阳能驱动的车辆代步之外,走路或者自行车也是不少绿色会议策划者的首选。并且会议地点距离住宿地点的距离也成为了节能减排的标准之一。使用同乘,大型公共汽车也成为很多大型活动的趋势。

 

目的地:旅游中的移动已经成为会议举行时的主要碳排放来源。越来越多的会议策划团队倾向于在目的地选择时选择对于大部分与会者都能短途、轻易到达的场所作为会议中心。如果使用飞机作为到达目的地的交通工具,转机在会议行程中尽量被减少,直达成为会议举行时的最优选择。

 

纸张使用:在会议过程中尽量减少纸张的使用,电子设备成为会议首选。从会议声明到会议邀请都可以通过电子邮件形式传达在电脑屏幕上阅读。尽量保证所有与会材料都能在相关网站下载。在使用纸张打印的时候尽量减少彩印,增加双面打印。

绿色会议的成功案例

More an more international scale contentions and exhibitions have come to China, and the “Green meeting” concept is brought in at the same time. To avoid any negative effect during the convention is the call “Green Meeting”.  MAG誌 will introduce you the concept by the following 4 sections, to discuss with you about the “Green Meeting” in China.

 

Definition

Green conventions or green meetings are conventions which are conducted in ways which minimize the environmental burdens imposed by such activities. Green event planners apply environmentally preferred practices to waste management, resource and energy use, travel and local transportation, facilities selection, siting and construction, food provision and disposal, hotels and accommodations, and management and purchasing decisions. The practice is known as “event greening” or “sustainable event management”.

Green event and convention planning is now an established trend within the global tourism and convention industry. Several cities in the United States and Europe now sport green convention centers designed using green building principles and practices.

Several high visibility events including the Olympic Games in Italy, Sydney, Utah, and Greece; the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, and the 2004 Democratic and Republican National Conventions have implemented green practices with varied success. A more recent example is that of Live Earth, a series of worldwide concerts held on July 7, 2007, that initiated a three-year campaign to combat climate change. Such efforts aim to conserve resources, protect air and water quality, habitat and human health, and showcase sustainability practices and concerns.

Parts of the tourism and convention industry now promote green meetings, conferences, and convention planning as demand for sustainability measures increases. Industry associations have produced standards and guides for green meetings. Government agencies and non-profit organizations also promote these practices with research, recommendations, grants and technical support. Some private consultants in the meeting planning industry specialize in mounting green events, and industry groups and governments now sponsor awards to recognize achievements.

Green conventions, meetings, conferencing and events are part of an international movement to achieve a sustainable world economy and livable planet.

Impact

A green meeting or event incorporates environmental considerations to minimize its negative impact on the environment.  Green or environmental considerations are one aspect of sustainability.  Sustainablity takes a “triple bottom line” approach that seeks to balance the social, environmental, and economic concerns against business needs.What are the Benefits of Green Meetings & Events?

The Economic Bottom Line – Planning and executing environmentally sustainable events isn’t just about being environmentally responsible, they can have economic benefits for the event organizer. In fact, many environmental activities can actually save money.

Example: collecting name badge holders for reuse at an event of 1,300 attendees can save approximately $975 for the event organizer.**

The Environmental Bottom Line – Using recycled materials, recycling materials used, reusing items and reducing materials used can significantly lessen the environmental impact an event has.

Example: if a five-day event serves 2,200 people breaks, breakfasts, lunches and receptions using china instead of plastic disposables, it prevents 859 kl. of plastic from going into a landfill.**

Example: Not pre-filling water glasses at banquet tables during three days of served lunches for 2,200 attendees will conserve 520 gallons of water.

Trend

Food & beverages: request food that is locally grown, organic, seasonal, preferably vegetarian, and produced by local people. Farming and catering involve many people and can easily address social integration of a marginalised workforce. When locally and culturally suitable, offer one vegetarian dish per day. With this one action you will achieve multiple sustainability goals, from reducing CO2 emissions to improving participants’ health, animal protection and awareness-raising. Make sure the seafood served is from sustainable sources (e.g., use eco-labels such as the Maritime Stewardship Council (MSC) to help choose products) and the foods are not from endangered or threatened species (biodiversity targets).

 

Transport & mobility: Transport and mobility differ considerably from country to country and city to city. Aside from eco-mobility, where non- motorised mobility (e.g., walking, cycling) are options, different socially inclusive means of transport and mobility – related also to delivery and transport of goods – should be considered. Shared transport (carpooling, car- sharing, truck-sharing), as well as referring to useful social projects (such as transport options arranged by NGOs that work with disadvantaged or socially excluded people) in this field, can be an option.

 

Destination:Given that travel is the main source of emissions generated during an event, the geographical area where an event takes place greatly influences its environmental impact. If you have the possibility to select your destination, choose one that is central to the majority of participants, easily reachable by train or at least a combination of public transport and direct flights. Connecting flights considerably increase carbon emissions as the main impact is produced during takeoff and landing so maximising the option of direct flights is essential. By doing an inventory of the expected origins and distances of attendees, you can find the best location – some online calculators can help you do this.

 

Paper use: Before and after the event, minimise the amount of print material in favour of electronic communication. Develop all documents, especially announcements and invitations, in a way that they can conveniently be sent via email and read on computer screens (short and light documents); make sure that an electronic version of all documents is available on the website. If you need to print some material, do so in a sustainable way (e.g., by reducing the text and the number of pages, choosing fewer colours, using recycled paper and sustainable ink, etc.). Encourage participants not to print the electronic material you send, unless strictly necessary. If they must print, ask them to follow sustainable printing recommendations.
